Editor’s Note

As the first issue of the new year, Issue No. 193 introduces women in science and technology whose careers cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.

This month’s Feature Report presents the life of Dr. Shih-Hsien Hsu, a pioneer of democracy in Chiayi and Taiwan’s first woman to earn a doctorate in medicine. Refusing to submit to Taiwan’s authoritarian political environment, she left medicine for public service. Her political career took her from elected representative to local government leader, earning the lasting respect of Chiayi’s residents. Trained as a physician and remembered as an outstanding politician, she became both a pioneer of women’s political participation and a model of serving society through medicine and governance.

The Career column features Pei Liu, a Chinese literature graduate who entered the technology industry and advanced to become a marketing department manager. She shares the challenges and growth she experienced while crossing from the humanities into technology and becoming a woman in STEM.

The Life column invites Dr. Yi-Ling Chen of the University of Wyoming to share her interdisciplinary and international academic journey. After graduating from National Taiwan University’s Department of Civil Engineering, she moved into urban planning and completed both master’s and doctoral degrees. She taught at a university in Taiwan for ten years before an unexpected opportunity brought her to the United States. In her article, Chen compares academic environments in Taiwan and the United States and reflects on how working under different systems changed her perspective.

The A Day column features a short video produced by three graduate students from National Taiwan Normal University’s Graduate Institute of Graphic Arts and Communications. Through an interview with a woman civil engineer from Hong Kong, the video reveals the distinctive challenges, rewards, and realities experienced by women working at engineering sites.

The final Education column introduces the award-winning science animation series Go Go Giwas. Producer Professor Li-Yu Fu discusses the professional dedication behind the series and her ambition to create science education animation rooted in Taiwan’s Indigenous cultures. A related report on the fourth season of Go Go Giwas is also featured in the newsletter’s Film and Television column.

Each month, the TWiST Newsletter presents the experiences and emotions of different women in science and technology, inviting readers to view the world through their perspectives. In the new year, we remain here to bring everyone new hope from the heart.
