Let us support young women engineers! June 23 is International Women in Engineering Day. Although women remain a minority in engineering, we can continue moving forward together. We welcome you to share your story—it may become a source of strength and inspiration for readers of the TWiST Newsletter.
In this issue’s Feature Report, Professor Huang-Tzu Ou from the Department of Pharmacy and the Institute of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at National Cheng Kung University shares how she balances motherhood, academic life, and leading a young research team. Despite feeling as though she is constantly moving between parallel universes, she explains how she stays energetic and motivated each day.
The Spotlight section features software engineer and YouTuber Kaixin Lin’s interview with TechNews Island. After unexpectedly entering software engineering, she created the YouTube channel Untyped—Yes, I’m an Engineer to share her career experiences. The Life section introduces The Storm Media’s special feature “Choices of Elite Mothers,” which follows two part-time stay-at-home mothers as they navigate childcare and returning to work.
In News, we congratulate the recipients of the second Corning Women Researcher Best Paper Award: doctoral student Ching-Hua Tseng from National Chung Hsing University’s Department of Soil and Environmental Sciences and Professor Ya-Yu Chiang from its Department of Mechanical Engineering. British space scientist and television presenter Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock was also honored on International Women’s Day with a unique Barbie doll created in her likeness.
The Recommended Reading section continues exploring the relationship between women, work, and family. Research featured in the American business magazine Fast Company identified as many as 30 reasons used to label women as “not quite right” for promotion. Finally, our Book Recommendation, After Becoming a Mother, You Are Both a Princess and an Evil Queen: Maternal Wisdom in Fairy Tales Through Jungian Psychology, accompanies women on their journey into motherhood and reminds them that they are not alone during this transition.
