On November 23, 2023, the Taiwan Women in Science and Technology Association (TWiST) and the Chinese Institute of Engineers held a signing ceremony at the institute’s conference room. The partnership aims to advance engineering technology in Taiwan, support the modernization of national development, and strengthen cooperation between the two organizations.

Representing TWiST, President Man-Yu Lin delivered remarks at the ceremony. She explained that TWiST was founded by Professor Chiari Wu in 2011 and now has nearly 350 members from more than 30 professional fields across academia and industry, including engineering, physics, and chemistry.

President Lin noted the significant gender imbalance in Taiwan’s STEM workforce. According to data from the National Science and Technology Council, women account for less than 30 percent of STEM professionals, while men continue to outnumber women in both engineering and science. The field also faces a persistent leaky pipeline, with women’s representation declining at more advanced career stages.

TWiST therefore seeks to encourage women across different professions to pursue leadership roles and help create diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplaces. These efforts can contribute to corporate sustainability while generating new achievements and opportunities.

Since 2021, TWiST has held the annual Women in Science and Technology Convention, with Vice President Wen-Chen Hsueh serving as one of its key organizers. The convention’s evolving themes reflect the association’s goals. In 2021, it highlighted accomplished women engineers, scholars, and professionals in Taiwan and invited them to share their educational and career journeys. In 2022, industry representatives discussed strategies for creating gender-friendly workplaces. In 2023, the convention expanded its international connections by inviting overseas professionals to share practical approaches.

President Lin expressed her appreciation to Chinese Institute of Engineers President Cheng-Hung Yang for initiating this meaningful collaboration. The two organizations share many active members who have made valuable contributions to both associations.

Through this partnership, TWiST looks forward to creating more opportunities for cooperation while drawing on the Chinese Institute of Engineers’ extensive history, experience, and resources. By working together and supporting women in science and technology, both organizations hope to build a better future.

Together, we will be stronger and better.
