Out of the Shadows: Women Scientists Build Leadership and Support Networks

Career development for women scientists involves more than building professional expertise. It also means navigating gender bias in research environments, meeting leadership challenges, balancing work and life, and finding sources of support at different stages of a career.
To support the leadership development of women scientists, the Taiwan Women in Science and Technology Association (TWiST), Females in Mass Spectrometry, and Academia Sinica jointly organized the Out of the Shadows Leadership Development Program on April 27, 2026, at the Institute of Chemistry, Academia Sinica. Supported by a National Science and Technology Council initiative promoting gender equity, the event focused on women’s participation in STEM, career challenges, self-awareness, and the development of support networks.
Through keynote talks, group exchanges, anonymous writing, panel discussions, and informal networking, women scientists from different fields and career stages shared their experiences in a supportive setting. Their conversations revealed common threads across their circumstances and helped participants recognize that many pressures and difficulties are not isolated personal problems, but shared issues that deserve attention and discussion.
The event strengthened connections among women researchers while creating space for more concrete discussions of gender equity, women’s leadership, and support within research environments. TWiST will continue to advance exchange, advocacy, and support networks so that more women in STEM can be seen, supported, and empowered to make an impact.
