Introduction to Operational Amplifiers | High School Student Projects and STEM Education

On March 8, 2025, TWiST partnered with National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University to hold the “Electrical Engineering Classroom: Understanding Operational Amplifiers” workshop. Organized by the NYCU Maker Club, the program introduced high school students to operational amplifiers and circuit design through theory, demonstrations, and hands-on practice.
Course Design: Theory × Demonstration × Practice
The morning session introduced the principles of operational amplifiers (op-amps) and the use of electronic instruments. Students gained hands-on experience with oscilloscopes, function generators, and other laboratory equipment.
In the afternoon, students built and tested op-amp circuits using breadboards. This approach helped them connect theory with practice while developing their problem-solving skills.
Student Experiences: Challenges and Achievements
For many students, this was their first time building and operating an op-amp circuit. Although they encountered difficulties with wiring and debugging, they successfully completed the experiments with support from the instructors and teaching assistants.
One student shared: “The wiring seemed complicated at first, but when the circuit finally worked, the sense of achievement was incredible!” Others said the workshop sparked their interest in electronic circuit design and encouraged them to consider related careers.
STEM Education Through Operational Amplifiers
The workshop offered more than an introduction to operational amplifiers—it provided a complete STEM learning experience combining theory and practice. Students developed practical electronics skills and gained a clearer understanding of engineering education and career possibilities.
TWiST will continue collaborating with universities to offer hands-on courses in areas such as Arduino applications, Raspberry Pi projects, and digital circuit design, helping more students discover the joy of learning and explore their own paths in technology.
