[Gender and Technology] TWiST Brings STEAM Education on Gender, Energy, and the Environment to Changhua

TWiST continues addressing the challenges at the intersection of gender and technology while actively participating in civil-society dialogue. On April 23, TWiST President Jui-Hua Hung and TWiST Newsletter Editor-in-Chief Wen-Ling Hung were invited to speak at the “Forum on Gender Issues in Environment, Energy, and Technology,” jointly organized by the Changhua County Government Department of Social Affairs and National Changhua University of Education. Nearly 200 students, teachers, and community members attended.

Moderated by Lo-Yi Liu, Community Director of the Plain Law Movement, the forum featured firsthand experiences from the two speakers. They discussed gender blind spots in STEAM education and technology workplaces and explored how education, institutions, and culture can place gender equality at the heart of technology and sustainable development.

Challenging Gender Myths in STEAM: Perspectives from Women in Technology

Under the theme “Men in STEM, Women in the Humanities?”, the forum examined how gender stereotypes influence young people’s educational choices and career plans. Drawing from their academic and professional experiences, the speakers discussed challenges women often face in STEM, including the glass ceiling, pressure to balance work and family responsibilities, and technology systems that overlook gender-related needs.

Participants actively discussed questions such as “Is technology neutral?” One attendee noted that gender blind spots can exist even in energy policy. When decision-makers lack caregiving experience, policies may fail to address people’s actual needs.

Extending Gender Equality Education into University Classrooms

The forum was included in National Changhua University of Education’s Gender Equality Education Day and offered as a general-education lecture. Through guided discussion and personal experiences, students explored how gender can affect access to technology and influence the design of institutions and policies.

TWiST Continues Advocating for Gender Research and Institutional Change in Technology

TWiST has long promoted gender equality and the advancement of women in science and technology through four areas: building professional networks, supporting gender and technology research and advocacy, strengthening academic support in STEM, and connecting members with international platforms. Participating in this local forum was a practical step in advancing these goals.

TWiST will continue bringing together expertise from different fields, integrating gender perspectives into technology education and research, and promoting more inclusive policies and institutions. Gender should be more than a statistic—it should be an essential consideration in technological development and social equality.
