Post-Event Report: AI Illuminates New STEM Horizons — The FuStar Science Creativity Challenge Showcases Diverse Perspectives and Interdisciplinary Practice

Against the backdrop of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence, the Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA) and the Taiwan Women in Science and Technology Association (TWiST) jointly held the FuStar Science Creativity Challenge. Centered on the theme “AI Illuminates New STEM Horizons,” the competition encouraged senior high school, vocational high school, and five-year junior college students to combine foundational sciences—including physics, chemistry, biotechnology, and electrical control—with AI to develop solutions with industrial potential.
Data Insights: Young Women Put STEM into Practice
Young women stood out for both their high participation and consistent performance in this year’s competition:
• Finalist representation: Of the 43 finalists, 58% were female students (25 participants), while 42% were male students (18 participants).
• Teamwork and innovation: Teams including “神荼鬱壘·聲殊域濾,” “辰家書院,” “CHGSH MosAlto,” and “咩思研究所” demonstrated strong female research and development capabilities. Their work showed that women bring highly competitive strengths to AI applications, especially in defining problems and understanding user needs.

A Gathering of Talent: AI Creativity from Campuses Across Taiwan
The competition attracted 932 students. Through written proposals and AI-generated videos, participants turned their ideas into practical concepts spanning cybersecurity, smart manufacturing, healthcare, and unmanned vehicles.
• Leading campuses: Among the finalists, the Senior High School Affiliated to National Chung Hsing University had the highest representation at 12%, followed by Taipei Municipal Chenggong High School at 9%.
• Regional strengths: Students from northern Taiwan accounted for 59% of preliminary-round participants. In the final round, however, students from central Taiwan represented 33%, demonstrating the region’s competitiveness in science education and applied AI.
• International participation: The competition also attracted students from overseas. Two finalists, or 5%, attended overseas Taiwanese schools.
Connecting with Policy: Developing Talent for Fast Adoption and Broad Deployment
The competition closely aligned with the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ AI application advancement initiative, emphasizing solutions that lower barriers to adoption and accelerate real-world implementation.
• Practical problem-solving: Finalist teams such as “成弓足止你,” “中華七隊,” and “汪汪隊” began with real industrial challenges and explored how reliable AI could create value at scale.
• Interdisciplinary integration: Participants had to consider not only technology, but also user scenarios and market potential. The competition helped them develop practical thinking that connects directly with future industry needs.
FuStar was more than a competition—it was a hands-on platform that connected young students with emerging industry trends. Their creativity and drive will be an important force in advancing Taiwan’s industries amid global technology competition.
