119: You, Me, and Everyone—Girls’ Fire Safety Volunteering and Firefighting Coding Workshop

A new series of activities celebrating the International Day of the Girl and women in technology began with an opening ceremony on the morning of December 16.

The morning program opened with an engaging fire safety presentation by Shih-Feng Kao, Honorary Chair of the national association of fire protection engineers. Yu-Chen Chu, a student at Taipei First Girls High School and a recipient of the 2017 Macronix Science Award, then presented her award-winning project, “Eliminating Smoke and Extinguishing Fire.” Finally, Hsiao-Mei Lin, General Manager of HEX Safety, introduced intelligent evacuation systems and the concept behind Girls Make Games.

The afternoon program combined practical fire safety education with coding. Participants practiced emergency evacuation skills using interactive equipment at the Disaster Prevention Science Education Center and learned to create a firefighting program with Scratch.

The full-day event provided a rewarding learning experience for students and families. It was especially encouraging to see the potential of female high school students in science and disaster prevention. We look forward to the upcoming activities in this series!
