2025 Marie Curie Science Camp | TAIWAN Stands Strong: Looking Toward an Intelligent Taiwan

The 2025 Marie Curie Science Camp, themed “TAIWAN Stands Strong: Looking Toward an Intelligent Taiwan,” was held from July 4 to 7 at National Taiwan Normal University’s Linkou Campus and Academia Sinica. Focusing on AI, sustainability, and precision health, the camp combined keynote lectures, AI projects, scientific experiments, and career discussions for more than 100 participants.
Cultivating Scientific Talent in the Intelligent Era
The camp brought together 122 outstanding high school students and teachers from Taiwan and overseas. Participants explored cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, sustainable technology, and precision health while examining the applications and ethical challenges emerging from the rapid development of AI.
Keynote Lectures × Science Talks × Experiments
The four-day program featured five keynote lectures delivered by leading scholars from institutions including Caltech, Academia Sinica, and Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration. Topics ranged from AI in weather forecasting and healthcare to AI-generated content and virtual character creation, encouraging participants to reflect on the future direction of technology.
On the evening of July 5, Academia Sinica researcher Kuei-Hsien Chen hosted a Midsummer Science Talk. Speakers from technology and industry shared their personal experiences and observations about AI, reminding students to maintain critical thinking and humanistic awareness while learning to coexist with AI.
AI Experiments × Women Scientists as Mentors
The camp included two scientific experiments involving phenolphthalein reaction kinetics and ferrocene. Twenty-six student assistants from Taipei First Girls High School supported participants throughout the activities.
Using Arduino, students detected acid–base reactions and performed catalyst-related calculations, strengthening their ability to integrate science and engineering. Many participants said it was their first experience combining programming with chemistry and that the hands-on experiments gave them a strong sense of achievement and a fresh understanding of both subjects.
Career Luncheon × Inspiring Conversations
During the Career Planning and Practice Luncheon, scientists from academia and industry spoke with high school students about education, employment, and career development.
Several TWiST board members and supervisors also shared their experiences, including Professor Man-Yu Lin, Chief Investment Officer Shu-Fen Cheng, Professor Li-Yin Chen, and Chairperson Shun-Lien Song. Their stories introduced students to the diverse career paths and resilience of women in science and technology.
Digital Resources × Cross-School Collaboration
Following the camp’s established tradition, recorded lectures were edited and uploaded to the Marie Curie Science Camp YouTube channel. By 2025, the channel had received more than 28,000 views and accumulated over 10,000 hours of viewing time, making it an important resource for science outreach.
The camp also incorporated interactive activities using the Ministry of Education’s Adaptive Learning Platform. Outdoor games and team competitions made technology education more engaging and encouraged active participation.
Supporting the Next Generation of Women in STEM
From accessible keynote lectures and interdisciplinary experiments to career conversations with mentors, every part of the camp planted a seed of scientific curiosity—one connected to future possibilities, personal passions, and the courage to pursue new dreams.
