This Month’s New Release: TWiST Newsletter Issue No. 202 Is Out!

TWiST Newsletter Issue No. 202 invited Ming-Shan Tsou, a senior producer of science communication programs, to serve as guest editor.
Tsou created the prototype for the NSTC’s industry–academia science communication program, “Technology Taiwan: A New National Strength.” Unlike the Discovery Channel or National Geographic, this pioneering Taiwanese television series focused on local technological development and introduced viewers to Taiwan’s scientific and technological strengths. It received widespread acclaim after airing on Formosa Television and Chinese Television System.
Building on its success, Tsou later planned the NSTC television program “Biomedical New Blue Ocean,” which explored the development of Taiwan’s biotechnology industry. These two innovative programs established influential formats for science and technology reporting on Taiwanese television.
With extensive interdisciplinary experience and professional networks, Tsou was invited by the Taiwan Inspirational Association (TIA) to lead its “Women in Technology” lecture series. She has also served as a supervisor of the Asia-Pacific Development Foundation and a board member of the Taiwan Media Watch Foundation.
As autumn arrives, the TWiST Newsletter welcomes senior media professional Ming-Shan Tsou, who brings readers a rich selection of articles to enjoy before winter.

Ming-Shan Tsou｜Senior Producer of Science Communication Programs
With the arrival of the AI era, Taiwan has become a major force in global technology. Its technology-driven stock market value has risen to seventh in the world, surpassing Germany, while the semiconductor industry has supported rapid growth in 5G communications, smart machinery, intelligent vehicles, microsatellites, and aerospace electronics.
This AI revolution presents a once-in-a-century opportunity in which women in technology must participate.
After many years in science communication, I have often reflected on one of Taiwan’s greatest untapped sources of potential: women in technology. Their participation can also help address the shortage of highly skilled technology professionals.
In Taiwan, the journey of women in technology—from education to senior decision-making positions—is gradually becoming more gender-friendly, and increasing numbers of outstanding women are emerging. Their professional development, leadership, and influence are receiving greater recognition.
This issue presents examples of how schools encourage girls from high school through university to pursue STEM education. It also features women who have made important contributions and assumed leadership roles in technology careers, along with personal success stories that can inspire others.
Looking ahead, I hope Taiwan’s girls will overcome gender stereotypes and the traditional divide between the sciences and humanities. May they courageously pursue their dreams and become shining stars in the vast universe of technology.
When the potential of Taiwan’s women in technology is fully realized, they can become a powerful “women’s shield” for the nation—one even more promising than the “silicon shield” represented by TSMC.
