From October 4 to 5, 2024, the 14th Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Nation Network (APNN) under the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists (INWES) was held at the Vietnam National Innovation Center in Hanoi. Centered on the theme “The Role of Women in Science & Technology and International Integration for Sustainable Development,” the event highlighted key global issues including gender equality, innovation in science and technology, and sustainability.

TWiST Represents Taiwan with Diverse Perspectives
The conference brought together nearly 400 participants from 13 countries, including women scientists, engineers, and academics, to discuss leadership and participation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The Society of Taiwan Women in Science and Technology (TWiST) participated with a six-member delegation led by Vice President Prof. Chao-Ping Hsu. Delegates included former president Song Shun-Lien, Professors Kao Hui-Chun and Chang Shu-Mei, newsletter Editor-in-Chief Dr. Chen Ming-Hsiu, and research assistant Jen Chia-Yu.

Presenting Taiwan’s Achievements in DEI and Sustainable Technology
During the thematic session on "Health and Environment," Prof. Hsu delivered a featured presentation titled “The Women in Science & Technology Convention in Taiwan: A Four-Year Journey on DEI and ESG (2021–2024),” highlighting Taiwan’s efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) values in the science and technology sectors. Her talk emphasized the essential role of women in shaping policy and driving sustainable innovation.

Dr. Chen Ming-Hsiu presented a study on “Taiwanese Indigenous Female Students’ Perceptions of Scientists,” addressing the importance of inclusive education and cultural representation in STEM. Her research received strong engagement from attendees and sparked discussions on education reform and representation in science.

Strengthening Regional Collaboration through Science and Gender Equality
In addition to panel sessions, the conference featured country report presentations where each national delegation shared updates on women in science and technology. TWiST provided an overview of Taiwan’s progress in supporting female talent in STEM, policy developments, and suggestions for enhancing international collaboration and youth participation. At the closing ceremony, South Korea was announced as the host of the 2025 APNN meeting.

Building a Global Platform for Gender and Sustainability in Science
The INWES-APNN Annual Meeting serves as a key international platform to amplify women’s voices in STEM and strengthen regional partnerships for a more equitable and sustainable future. Through this year’s participation, TWiST deepened its connections with partner organizations across Asia-Pacific and demonstrated Taiwan’s ongoing commitment to science policy, gender mainstreaming, and global cooperation in advancing science and technology.
